Is KuCoin Legit? Security, Regulation And Fee Review

Published Updated 11 min read

Is KuCoin legit? A glowing glass shield with the KuCoin logo on a black pedestal, cover for a KuCoin security, regulation and fee review

Is KuCoin legit? Based on the public record, KuCoin is a large, long-running exchange that publishes reserve data and made users whole after its 2020 hack, but it also pleaded guilty to a US criminal charge in 2025 and saw its EU arm restricted by an Austrian regulator in 2026. In this KuCoin review, Backcom.io walks through regulation, security history, fees and withdrawal limits, so you can judge the platform on checkable facts rather than reputation.

Is KuCoin Legit? The Short Answer

KuCoin is a real, operating exchange, not a scam, but its record includes serious compliance findings, so "legit" does not mean "risk free". Three questions decide whether it fits you:

  • Is the company real? KuCoin runs a large public platform with fee pages, a reserve page and a support centre.
  • Has it been held to account? US prosecutors resolved a case against it in January 2025, which is a fact to weigh, not to ignore.
  • Is it available where you live? KuCoin left the US market, and its EU entity has had limits, so your country matters most.

No exchange can be called safe in absolute terms. A fair verdict is a list of facts, a list of open questions and a plan to keep your own risk small.

KuCoin Regulation: What The Record Shows

Is KuCoin legit? KuCoin regulation by region: United States exit, EEA status to check with the Austrian FMA, and country restrictions elsewhere
KuCoin Regulation: What The Record Shows

KuCoin regulation is not one global licence; it is a mix of regional authorisations and enforcement outcomes that differ by country. Most of the picture comes from official releases and press coverage, so verify each point on the regulator's own register.

RegionWhat the record showsHow to verify
United StatesOn 27 January 2025 KuCoin pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, paid more than $297 million (a $184.5 million forfeiture and a $112.9 million fine) and agreed to exit the US market for at least two years (DOJ press release)US Department of Justice (SDNY)
European Economic AreaKuCoin EU Exchange GmbH received a MiCA licence from Austria's Financial Market Authority in late November 2025. In February 2026 the FMA barred it from new business over anti-money-laundering and sanctions organisational gaps (Cointelegraph report)FMA register and the ESMA CASP register
Other countriesNo single global licence is published; availability follows KuCoin's own restricted-country listKuCoin terms and your KYC country

Reference summary of public statements, as at 5 November 2026. The current status of the EU restriction is not verified here, so check the FMA notices before you act.

Two cautions apply. First, the US case concerned anti-money-laundering controls and registration, and the DOJ said KuCoin's co-founders accepted two-year deferred prosecution agreements and stepped down from management. Second, KuCoin said the EU restriction followed the departure of two compliance staff and described the matter as contained. Both facts are company-versus-regulator accounts, so read the primary documents.

Also check the accepted and restricted countries list for your KYC country. Rules and taxes on crypto differ by country of residence, so ask a local adviser about your own position.

Is KuCoin Safe? Security, Reserves And The 2020 Hack

Is KuCoin safe? Proof of reserves is a snapshot, not an audit, and the 2020 hot wallet hack of $281 million with 84% recovered
Is KuCoin Safe? Security, Reserves And The 2020 Hack

Safety has two parts: what the exchange does to protect assets, and what happened when protection failed. Both matter for a fair KuCoin review.

Proof Of Reserves

KuCoin publishes a proof of reserves page that uses a Merkle tree, a method that lets each user check that their balance is included in the total of customer liabilities. The snapshot dated 31 October 2026 shows reserve ratios of 112% for BTC, 115% for ETH, 110% for USDT and 127% for USDC. The page says an independent third party verified the data but does not name it.

An earlier report is easier to check. In December 2022 Mazars published a factual findings report that put reserves at 101% for BTC, 100% for ETH, 102% for USDT and 101% for USDC as at 26 November 2022.

Proof of reserves is a snapshot, not a full audit. It compares assets with liabilities at one point in time, covers only listed assets, and does not show loans or off-platform obligations. Treat it as a positive transparency step, not a guarantee of solvency.

The September 2020 Hot Wallet Hack

In late September 2020 attackers drained KuCoin hot wallets of roughly $281 million. By 11 November 2020 KuCoin said it had recovered about 84% of the stolen assets through on-chain tracking and legal action, and that it had enough funds to cover the remaining losses so that no user would lose money (Decrypt report).

This is a mixed signal. A hack of that size shows that hot wallets are a real attack surface. Making users whole shows financial strength at that time. The recovery claim comes from KuCoin itself, and it is six years old, so it says little about today's controls.

For general protection, the settings in our account security checklist apply to any exchange: two-factor authentication, an anti-phishing code and a withdrawal whitelist.

KuCoin Review Of Fees: What You Actually Pay

KuCoin fees on an assumed $100,000 monthly volume: futures maker 0.02%, futures taker 0.06% and spot 0.100%
KuCoin Review Of Fees: What You Actually Pay

KuCoin fees follow a maker-taker model, and the headline rate depends on the product and your 30-day volume tier. KuCoin's fee pages list the base spot rate at 0.100% for both makers and takers on its main coin class, while other classes start higher. Perpetual futures start at 0.02% for makers (resting limit orders) and 0.06% for takers (orders that execute at once). Rates change, so confirm them on the live fee page before you trade.

The practical point is that order type changes your cost. If you want to understand the difference in depth, read our guide to maker and taker fees. A trader who uses market orders pays the taker rate and also risks slippage. On perpetual contracts, add funding payments, which are charged separately from trading fees.

A short worked example, for illustration only, with an assumed $100,000 of monthly volume:

ProductAssumed fee rateFees paid
Perpetual futures, all maker orders0.02%$20
Perpetual futures, all taker orders0.06%$60
Spot at the base rate0.100%$100

The figures are an assumption, as at 5 November 2026, using published base rates. They are not a forecast, and your VIP tier, discounts and order mix will change the result.

KuCoin Withdrawal Limits And Problems: What To Check Before You Deposit

Complaints about KuCoin withdrawal limits and delays usually fall into a few repeatable categories, and most can be reduced before you deposit. This article could not verify the current limits per verification level, so read them in your account settings. Searching for withdrawal problems mainly returns user posts and review sites of mixed quality, so treat individual stories as signals, not proof.

The common causes on any exchange are:

  • Pending KYC or a risk review: a withdrawal can be held while the exchange checks identity or account activity.
  • Network congestion or a wrong network: sending a token on the wrong chain can lose it.
  • Withdrawal limits and fees: daily limits and per-network fees apply, and they depend on your verification level.
  • Account restrictions: an account in a restricted country or one that breaks the terms may be limited.
  • Hacks and maintenance: the 2020 incident suspended deposits and withdrawals for days.

A sensible routine reduces these risks. Verify your identity first, make a small test withdrawal, and only then move larger amounts. Keep long-term holdings in your own wallet instead of leaving everything on any exchange. A deeper look at moving funds safely is in our guide to deposit and withdrawal safety rules, which applies to the same habits.

KuCoin Rebates Through The Partner Program

KuCoin Rebates are a share of your trading fees returned to you when your account is registered through the partner program. The program page lists a 60% rebate share on spot and futures fees, paid daily by KuCoin, with no minimum volume and no time limit (page updated 23 October 2026, checked 5 November 2026).

Using the example above: $100,000 of taker-only futures volume at 0.06% produces $60 in fees, and a 60% share would return $36. The same volume on spot at 0.100% would produce $100 in fees and a $60 rebate. A rebate is a share of a fee, not of your trade or your profit, and it applies to winning and losing trades alike.

Three conditions matter. The account must be registered through the program link before you trade, the UID has to be linked in the partner App, and each sub-account must be linked separately. KuCoin allows one verified account per ID document, so an existing account usually cannot be switched to a new referrer, although some can be moved. Ask support about your case. To compare programs fairly, read our crypto exchange rebate comparison.

You can read the current terms, linking steps and fee calculator on the KuCoin rebate page.

Backcom.io is an independent introducing broker (IB/affiliate) of the exchanges it lists, including KuCoin; rebates are paid from the commission the exchange pays Backcom.io. See the risk disclaimer for details. A rebate is not a reason to open an account, deposit funds or trade more than you planned.

How KuCoin Compares With Other Exchanges

A fair comparison looks at licences, security record, fees and the products you need, and it does not produce one winner for every trader. We do not rank exchanges here, because there is no common scoring method that covers every user's needs. If you are building a shortlist, our independent reviews of OKX, Bybit and MEXC use the same questions, so you can read them side by side.

Before choosing, it also helps to understand centralized and decentralized exchanges. KuCoin is a centralized exchange, so it holds custody of assets you leave on the platform.

6 Checks Before You Use KuCoin

Six checks before you use KuCoin: country, legal entity, regulator, reserves, deposit and withdrawal test, and risk limit
6 Checks Before You Use KuCoin

Run the same checklist on any exchange before you deposit.

  1. Confirm your country is accepted in the KuCoin terms for your KYC country.
  2. Identify the legal entity that serves your account in the user agreement.
  3. Check that entity's status on the regulator's own register, including any restriction notices.
  4. Read the reserve page and note which assets and dates it covers.
  5. Test with a small deposit and withdrawal before moving size.
  6. Set a risk limit: a leveraged position can be closed fast, and our guide to calculating liquidation price shows how to plan one.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About KuCoin

Is KuCoin A Scam?

There is no public finding that KuCoin is a scam. It is an operating exchange that publishes reserve data and made users whole after its 2020 hack. It did plead guilty to a US compliance charge in 2025, so judge it on the full record and verify the entity that serves your country.

Is KuCoin Regulated?

Partly, and it depends on the region. KuCoin EU received a MiCA licence from Austria's FMA in late 2025, which the FMA later restricted for new business in February 2026. There is no single global licence. Check the regulator's register for your own region.

Is KuCoin Safe For Beginners?

It can be used carefully if you keep position sizes small, enable two-factor authentication, start with spot trading and avoid high leverage. Beginners often lose money through leverage and wrong-network transfers, not through the exchange itself. Never deposit money you cannot afford to lose.

Can I Withdraw My Money From KuCoin?

Withdrawals are normally available once your account is verified, subject to limits, network fees and any risk review. Delays happen on every exchange. Test with a small amount first, use the correct network, and contact KuCoin support if a withdrawal is held for long.

How Much Do KuCoin Fees Cost?

Published base rates are 0.100% for spot on the main coin class and 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker on perpetual futures, with VIP discounts at higher volume. Your cost also includes spreads, slippage and funding, so check the live fee page and compare net cost for your own trading style.

Conclusion: Is KuCoin Legit?

KuCoin looks like a real and established exchange, but its 2025 US plea and 2026 EU restriction mean the right question is whether its licences, security record and fees fit your situation. It publishes reserve data and covered losses after its 2020 hack. Verify the entity and registration for your country, test withdrawals with a small amount, and treat any rebate as a small cost reduction, not a source of profit.
