Funding can change your futures balance without a new trade. Learn how settlement direction, contract value and timing shape the payment.

A futures position can stay open overnight while your USDT balance falls by a few dollars. No trade was closed: the change may be a funding fee. So what is funding rate, and how does that percentage become a payment? The rate sets the direction and size of the transfer between long and short positions; the fee is the amount credited or debited.

In this article, Backcom.io explains the mechanism, walks through a 10,000 USDT position, and shows how to check the rate and settlement schedule before holding a trade.

What Is Funding Rate And Why Do Perpetual Futures Need It?

What is funding rate: when the perpetual trades above its index, longs pay shorts and the price is pulled back toward spot; paid between traders, not to the exchange
What Is Funding Rate And Why Do Perpetual Futures Need It?

Funding rate is the percentage used to calculate periodic payments between long and short holders of a perpetual futures contract. The payments encourage its price to stay near the spot index price, even though the two prices can diverge temporarily.

Unlike a dated futures contract, a perpetual has no expiry date that forces convergence on a particular day. That distinction is central to this research on perpetual futures. Understanding funding helps you separate price-driven profit or loss from cash flows that occur while your position remains open. An ordinary spot purchase has no equivalent payment between opposing long and short holders.

What Is A Funding Fee? A Transfer Between Traders

A funding fee is the USDT paid or received at settlement. Binance and OKX say it passes between opposing positions; the exchange does not retain it as a service fee. Keep three futures costs separate:

ChargeRecipientWhen It Arises
Maker/taker trading feeExchangeWhen an opening or closing order fills.
Funding feeTrader on the opposing sideAt settlement while the position remains open.
Liquidation feeExchange or insurance fund, depending on the mechanismWhen a position is liquidated.

Funding sits outside the maker/taker fee schedule, so a lower trading commission does not reduce it. Like overnight swap on a CFD, it affects holding costs, although this payment moves between traders and can reverse direction.

Positive And Negative Funding Rate: Who Pays Whom?

Positive funding rate means longs pay shorts; negative funding rate means shorts pay longs; base rate 0.01% per 8 hours
Positive And Negative Funding Rate: Who Pays Whom?

Positive and negative funding rates identify the paying side. The rate reflects the contract’s premium to its index, a base interest component, and contract-specific limits:

  • Positive funding: Longs pay shorts. This commonly occurs when the perpetual trades above its index price.
  • Negative funding rate: Shorts pay longs. This commonly accompanies a perpetual trading below its index price.

The transfer reverses when the sign changes. For many contracts on an eight-hour schedule, the published base interest component is 0.01% per interval. A mildly positive rate around that level therefore does not, by itself, prove the market is overheated.

Does Negative Funding Rate Mean You Should Go Long?

Negative funding rate means shorts pay, but it is not a rule to buy. Receiving funding cannot protect a long from falling prices. On a 10,000 USDT position, receiving 0.02% produces 2 USDT per interval. A 1% price move on that same notional value represents 100 USDT.

Sustained negative funding can precede a short squeeze if prices rebound. It can also persist for weeks during a decline. Opening a trade solely to collect the payment ignores price and liquidation risk; ignoring funding across several intervals understates holding costs.

How To Calculate Funding Rate Payments On A 10,000 USDT Position

How to calculate funding rate payments: funding fee equals position value times funding rate; 10,000 USDT at 0.01% pays 1 USDT per interval and 90 USDT over 30 days
How To Calculate Funding Rate Payments On A 10,000 USDT Position

How to calculate funding rate payments begins with the position’s notional value at settlement. Multiply contract size by mark price, multiply that value by the settled rate, then use the sign to identify who pays. Initial margin is not the calculation base.

For a USDT-margined contract:

Funding fee = Position value at mark price × Funding rate

See the OKX perpetual funding mechanism for the exchange’s calculation and settlement rules.

Illustrative example: Assume a 10,000 USDT position and an unchanged rate and notional value throughout. Eight-hour settlement means three payments per day, or 90 over 30 days. Price moves and trading fees are excluded:

Funding Rate Per 8 HoursPer IntervalPer Day30 DaysPayer → Recipient
+0.01%1 USDT3 USDT90 USDTLong → short
+0.05%5 USDT15 USDT450 USDTLong → short
−0.02%2 USDT6 USDT180 USDTShort → long

The notional value changes with the mark price. If you hold 0.125 BTC and the mark rises from 80,000 to 88,000 USDT, notional rises from 10,000 to 11,000 USDT. At 0.01%, the illustrative payment becomes 1.1 USDT.

Where Does The Funding Rate Come From?

The rate combines a base interest component and a premium index, which captures the gap between the perpetual and its index. Binance clamps the difference between interest and premium within ±0.05%. For an eight-hour interval, a premium from −0.04% to +0.06% leaves the resulting rate at 0.01%.

Each contract also has a cap and floor. API data recorded on 14 October 2026 put BTCUSDT limits at ±0.3% on Binance, ±0.333% on Bybit, and ±0.375% on OKX. These are dated contract settings, not permanent thresholds.

Funding Uses Position Value, Not Initial Margin

Funding is charged on notional position value. Higher leverage reduces the initial margin needed for the same 10,000 USDT position, making an unchanged funding payment a larger share of that margin. Assume the position value and rate remain constant for 30 days:

LeverageInitial Margin30 Days At +0.01% (90 USDT)30 Days At +0.05% (450 USDT)
5x2,000 USDT4.5% of margin22.5% of margin
10x1,000 USDT9% of margin45% of margin
20x500 USDT18% of margin90% of margin

OKX says a payment owed comes from position margin in isolated mode, or account equity in cross margin mode. A smaller equity buffer can bring the liquidation price closer to the current price. For the distinction between position value and collateral, see how margin is calculated.

Funding Intervals And How To Check The Rate

Funding intervals: 8-hour contracts settle 3 times a day at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC, 4-hour contracts 6 times, and 1-hour settlement after a cap is hit
Funding Intervals And How To Check The Rate

Funding intervals determine how many times a position can incur a payment each day. Check the schedule for the exact contract rather than assuming every market follows BTCUSDT:

  • Eight hours: Common default times are 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC — check how your platform displays them in local time. Binance, OKX and Bybit publish this default schedule.
  • Four hours: API data recorded on 14 October 2026 listed 470 such contracts on Binance. Bybit had 419 four-hour pairs and 446 eight-hour pairs; BTCUSDT remained on eight hours at both.
  • One hour after a limit is reached: Binance introduced faster settlement on 2 May 2025 and Bybit on 30 October 2025. OKX can move through 8 → 4 → 2 → 1-hour steps.
  • Only open positions qualify: Close before assessment and you neither pay nor receive that interval’s funding. Actual assessment can deviate by about 15 seconds on Binance and take up to roughly one minute on OKX.

If both contracts displayed a hypothetical 0.01% per interval, a four-hour contract would settle six times daily versus three for an eight-hour contract. On 10,000 USDT, that is 6 versus 3 USDT a day. This assumes an identical rate per interval; OKX actually normalises rates by interval length. Convert rates to percent per day before comparing contracts.

How To Check The Binance Funding Rate, OKX And Bybit

The Binance funding rate and countdown appear above the candlestick chart on its Futures interface. To review earlier settlements, open Data → Futures Data and select Real-Time Funding Rate or Funding Rate History. Settled history is more useful than a single live reading when estimating holding costs.

OKX shows the rate, next settlement time and history in its perpetual contract details. Bybit publishes the rate, next payment time, interval and contract-specific limits. The live number is an estimate; the payment uses the rate finalised at settlement. Check the interval and recent history, especially near the cutoff.

Using Funding Rate To Read Market Sentiment

Funding rate can reveal demand for leveraged positioning, particularly when its sign and size persist. Read it alongside price and liquidity:

  • High positive funding over several intervals: Long holders accept a higher cost to stay open. A price reversal could trigger liquidations that amplify a long squeeze.
  • Deep negative funding rate: Shorts accept a payment burden and may face pressure to close if prices rebound. CoinDesk reported roughly 47 consecutive days of negative funding in April 2026; that observation did not identify when a short squeeze would occur.
  • Around 0.01% per eight hours: The contract may be close to its index, but one rate alone cannot establish that leverage is absent.

A 2023 BIS study of crypto carry linked a large futures–spot spread to smaller investors seeking leveraged upside and to subsequent crash risk. Its subject was the broader futures–spot spread, not a stand-alone funding signal.

Funding is delayed, does not show position size, and can differ across exchanges. Compare it with price, open interest and fear and greed measures, especially for thinly traded altcoins. The 11 October 2025 liquidation shock illustrated how positioning pressure can magnify volatility. Backcom.io treats the rate as one window into crowded positioning, not an independent entry signal.

Reducing Holding Costs: Funding, Trading Fees And Maker Orders

Funding adds a recurring cost to a position kept through settlement; closing earlier generally leaves trading fees as the principal charge. Assume a 10,000 USDT position, a 0.05% taker fee and a 0.02% maker fee on each fill. Opening and closing cost 10 USDT as taker or 4 USDT as maker. Actual fees depend on the account.

Funding Per 8 HoursPer IntervalEquals Round-Trip Taker Fees (10 USDT)Equals Round-Trip Maker Fees (4 USDT)
0.01%1 USDT10 intervals (~3.3 days)4 intervals (~1.3 days)
0.02%2 USDT5 intervals (~1.7 days)2 intervals (16 hours)
0.05%5 USDT2 intervals (16 hours)1 interval (8 hours)

At +0.01% every eight hours, 30 days costs 90 USDT, nine times the assumed round-trip taker charge. Actual funding costs require adding each settled interval, since rates and position values can change. Before holding, check:

  1. Settlement time: Confirm the interval and next assessment.
  2. Position size: Reducing notional value reduces the periodic payment.
  3. Order execution: A limit order receives the maker fee only if it adds liquidity.
  4. Paying side: Consider how long you plan to hold when that side faces a high rate.

Is Collecting Funding Really Risk-Free?

Holding spot and shorting a perpetual to receive positive funding still leaves several risks:

  • Four fills: Opening and closing both legs incurs fees and possible slippage.
  • A sign change: Expected income can become a payment owed.
  • Liquidation: A thinly margined short leg can be closed forcibly if the price rises.
  • Price divergence: The two legs can diverge further just when you need to exit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Funding Rate

Do You Pay Funding If You Close Before Settlement?

No. Only positions still open at assessment pay or receive that interval’s funding. The actual charge may occur seconds, or roughly a minute, away from the displayed time. Avoid relying on a last-second exit. Check both the countdown and the exact contract’s schedule before deciding when to close.

Where Is The Funding Fee Deducted, And Can It Change Your Liquidation Price?

Yes, an outgoing payment can affect liquidation. OKX deducts it from position margin in isolated mode or account equity in cross mode. With less collateral or equity behind the trade, the liquidation price may move closer, depending on the margin mode and exchange rules. This matters most with high leverage and a thin buffer.

How High Is Too High For A Funding Rate?

There is no universal threshold. Compare the contract’s recent history with the 0.01% per eight-hour base and convert different intervals into daily percentages. On 14 October 2026, observed BTCUSDT caps ranged from ±0.3% to ±0.375% across the three exchanges. A technical cap is not a safe trading threshold.

Does Negative Funding Rate Always Benefit A Long Position?

No. An open long receives funding at a negative settled rate, but a 1% price decline can outweigh many small receipts. The displayed estimate may also change before settlement. Judge the potential payment alongside price risk, available margin and intended holding time, rather than treating the direction of funding as a trade signal.

How Does The Binance Funding Rate Differ From OKX And Bybit?

All three use transfers between longs and shorts. Their calculations involve a premium index, base interest and rate limits, but contract intervals, caps and rules for changing intervals can differ. Compare the same pair at the same time, and express each rate in percent per day before comparing its holding cost.

Conclusion

Understanding the funding rate explains a balance change even when you place no new trade. Check the sign to see who pays, the interval to estimate daily cost, and notional value against margin to understand the pressure on your position.

Before holding through settlement, review the countdown and calculate the payment for your current position. The figures here are illustrations; realised costs depend on each settled rate and your position value.
