What is an economic calendar?

An economic calendar lists upcoming data releases and events that can move prices — employment reports, inflation figures, interest rate decisions, central bank speeches. For forex and gold, this is the largest source of volatility, and the only one whose timing you know in advance.

Unlike technical analysis, a calendar does not predict direction. It answers one question: at what time might the market jump? Knowing that alone prevents most of the account damage that comes from accidentally holding a position into a release.

How to read the table

Impact level

The three coloured bars on each row show how much volatility the event is expected to produce:

  • Red — high impact. Can move price tens to hundreds of pips within minutes. NFP, CPI and Fed rate decisions belong here.
  • Amber — medium. Usually a short reaction of moderate size. Worth noting if you hold a position in the related currency.
  • Grey — low. Rarely produces meaningful movement. Safe to filter out.

Forecast and Previous

This is where many traders go wrong. The market does not react to the absolute number — it reacts to the gap between the actual figure and the forecast.

If CPI is forecast at 3.2% and prints exactly 3.2%, price often barely moves, even though 3.2% is a high reading. But if the forecast was 3.2% and it prints 3.6%, the reaction is violent — because that difference was not yet priced in.

Put differently: the forecast is already in the price before the release. What moves the market is the surprise.

The releases that matter most

EventFrequencyPrimarily moves
NFP — US Non-Farm PayrollsFirst Friday monthlyUSD, gold, US indices
CPI — Consumer Price IndexMonthlyUSD, gold, rate expectations
FOMC — Fed rate decision8× per yearEverything
PCE — Personal Consumption ExpendituresMonthlyUSD — the Fed’s preferred gauge
GDP — Economic growthQuarterlyThe releasing country’s currency
PMI — Purchasing Managers’ IndexMonthlyDomestic currency, moderate
ECB / BoE / BoJ rate decisionsScheduledEUR / GBP / JPY

US FOMC, PCE and GDP events in the table above are automatically linked to our explainers on each.

Three ways to handle a major release

  1. Stay out. Close positions or avoid new entries for roughly 15–30 minutes around the release. This is what most disciplined traders do — skipping an opportunity costs nothing, catching a violent reversal costs real money.
  2. Enter after the print. Wait for the first candle to close and let the market pick a direction. This avoids the two-way whipsaw common in the first 30 seconds.
  3. Hold, but smaller. If you must carry a position through the release, recalculate your size at a lower risk level and widen the stop beyond the noise.

Spread widening is the forgotten risk. Around major releases, spreads can widen five to ten times and orders slip. Your 20-pip stop may fill at 35. That is why reducing size matters more than moving the stop.

If you choose option 3, use the position size calculator to recalculate your lots at the lower risk — do not estimate it by feel.

Release times and time zones

The table above is already converted to Vietnam time (GMT+7), so no mental arithmetic is needed. One caveat: the US and Europe observe daylight saving, so the same event can shift by an hour between summer and winter. This calendar takes times directly from the source, so that shift is already reflected.

Frequently asked questions

Data refreshes hourly from the ForexFactory feed. Forecast figures can be revised during the week as new information arrives, so if you trade the news, check again close to the release time.

Some events have no quantitative figure — a central bank governor’s speech, for instance, or meetings that publish no headline number. For these, the impact comes from what is said rather than from a specific value, so there is nothing to forecast.

No. If the actual figure matches the forecast, the reaction is often mild because everything was already priced in. The impact rating reflects the potential for volatility, not a guarantee of it.

At minimum, both currencies in the pairs you trade. If you trade EURUSD, both USD and EUR releases are relevant. Gold in particular is heavily driven by USD news and US rate expectations, so US releases matter even if you trade no currency pair at all.

The page currently shows the week in progress. The public data source provides one week at a time, so the calendar rolls over automatically at the start of each week.
