An Expert Advisor can help you trade a prop firm account consistently, yet a bot that works on a personal account may breach a firm’s rules. Permission to use EAs is only the starting point: banned strategies, server load and IP policies vary by firm.
FundedNext and FundingPips both updated their restricted-country lists recently. In this article, Backcom.io compares seven firms’ rules as at 14 October 2026, works through daily loss limits and explains how to run an EA on a VPS within the applicable terms.
What Is Prop Firm EA Trading And Why Do Firms Restrict EAs?

Prop firm EA trading means using a MetaTrader Expert Advisor to open, manage or close trades in a challenge or funded account. The same loss limits, news rules and prohibited strategy clauses apply whether an order comes from a bot or a trader.
Before choosing an EA, distinguish between three tools:
- Self-written EAs: You own the source code. Blueberry Funded and FundingPips permit fully automated entries under their stated conditions.
- Third-party EAs: Bought, rented, downloaded or commissioned bots may cause different traders’ accounts to run the same strategy.
- Trade management tools: A bot might size positions, move SL/TP or partially close trades without generating signals. FundedNext still classifies it as an EA.
Even firms that permit automation monitor duplicated strategies, excessive server requests and attempts to exploit price latency.
Prop Firms That Allow EAs: Rules At Seven Firms
Prop firms that allow EAs attach conditions to the bot and the account package:
| Firm | Are EAs Allowed? | Main Conditions | Country Limits | Source, Update And Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blueberry Funded | Self-written EAs only, including synthetic accounts bought from 8 October 2026 | Declare the EA and obtain prior approval | Restricted-country list updated 2 July 2026 | Help Center, 8 October 2026; checked |
| E8 Markets | Yes, on Classic Markets | No shared EA strategy | E8 One capped at $200,000 for several countries; country set by KYC | Help Center, 5 October 2026; checked |
| FTMO | Yes | Third-party EA strategies may overlap; $400,000 cap | Confirm country availability before paying | FTMO US FAQ, 12 October 2026; global version not checked |
| FundedNext | Conditional | Under $50,000 on MT4/MT5; add-on required | Restricted-country list updated 27 August 2026 | Help Center, 8 September 2026; checked |
| FundingPips | Conditional | Prove ownership of self-written EA; third-party EA for trade management only, except 1K Instant | Restricted list updated 24 September 2026 | Help Center, 19 August 2026; checked |
| Maven Trading | Banned, except with prior approval | Published terms are inconsistent | Eligibility not confirmed | Firm’s published information; not directly checked |
| The5ers | Conditional | Own the source code and display a stop-loss | Eligibility not verified | Firm’s published information; not directly checked |
Terms compared as at 14 October 2026. Check the rules for your exact package before buying a challenge.
Does FTMO allow bots? Its US FAQ, updated 12 October 2026, allows EAs but warns that third-party strategies can overlap. Backcom.io does not rank these firms because their packages impose different conditions. See Blueberry Funded’s EA rules.
How To Check Each Firm’s Restricted-Country List
- FundedNext: Its restricted-country list for CFD products was updated on 27 August 2026 — reread it on the day you buy.
- FundingPips: Its Get Started document, updated 24 September 2026, carries the current restricted list.
- E8 Markets: Caps E8 One at $200,000 for several countries, limits some markets by region and determines your country through KYC documents.
- FTMO: Country availability was not rechecked against FTMO’s original page during this comparison, so confirm it before paying.
- Blueberry Funded: Its restricted-country list was last updated on 2 July 2026.
- Maven Trading and The5ers: Eligibility rules could not be verified directly. Lists change with little notice, so check the current list against your KYC country before paying any fee.
Check FundedNext’s restricted-country list.
Using a VPN or VPS, or declaring a different country, to bypass residence restrictions can cost you your account and payout. A VPS is for keeping the bot running reliably.
Prohibited EA Strategies In Prop Firm Challenges: HFT, Tick Scalping, Arbitrage And Copy Trading

Prohibited EA strategies are defined by what the robot does, even when you wrote it yourself. Common restrictions cover:
- HFT and excessive load: FTMO, FundedNext, FundingPips, Blueberry Funded and E8 Markets restrict bursts of order submissions or modifications.
- Tick scalping: FundedNext, FundingPips and Blueberry Funded ban taking a few ticks across many trades, while ordinary scalping is assessed separately.
- Latency arbitrage: All five firms above ban exploiting a slow data feed.
- Cross-account hedging: Opposing positions across accounts are prohibited, while hedging within one account depends on the firm.
- Challenge-passing EAs: FundedNext bans bots built specifically to pass evaluations and signals connected through messaging apps.
- Copy trading with others: Copying an account owned by someone else or letting another person trade for you is banned. Same-owner accounts are assessed by firm.
Read FundedNext’s prohibited-strategy list.
Server Load Thresholds Differ By Firm
Changing SL/TP also sends a server request. Check the relevant daily limits:
| Firm | Daily Load Threshold | Other Limit | Updated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blueberry Funded | 10,000 requests: warning | 20,000 requests: automatic lock | 11 November 2024 |
| E8 Markets | 2,000 server requests | 100 open and pending orders; 2,000 positions/day | 7 October 2026 |
| FTMO, US version | More than 2,000 server requests | 200 simultaneous pending orders on MT5 | 12 October 2026 |
| FundedNext | 200 orders or 2,000 messages: warning | 15,000 messages: immediate lock | 22 September 2026 |
Martingale And Grid: Rules Vary By Firm
Martingale increases lot size after a loss, while a grid places orders at regular price intervals.
- FundedNext bans grids but not martingale, according to documents updated 7 April and 22 September 2026.
- Blueberry Funded allows both on standard accounts bought from 12 March 2026, but bans them on synthetic accounts bought from 8 October 2026.
- E8 Markets allows martingale if it can be executed in the real market, according to its document updated 9 October 2026.
- The FTMO documents checked do not name either strategy.
EA Daily Loss Limit: A $100,000 Account Example

An EA daily loss limit can be hit while positions are still open if the firm counts floating losses before the bot closes them.
Assume a $100,000 account with a $5,000 daily loss limit and $10,000 overall loss limit, as in FTMO 2-Step. At $10 per pip per lot on EURUSD, ignoring swaps, a grid EA opens 0.10 lot and doubles each level, 20 pips apart:
| Adverse Move | Open Trades | Total Lots | Floating Loss ($) | Capital (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 80 pips | 5 | 3.10 | 520 | 0.52% |
| 100 pips | 6 | 6.30 | 1,140 | 1.14% |
| 120 pips | 7 | 12.70 | 2,400 | 2.4% |
| 140 pips | 8 | 25.50 | 4,940 | 4.94% |
| About 140.2 pips | 8 | 25.50 | 5,000; daily limit reached | 5% |
| About 159.8 pips | 8 | 25.50 | 10,000; overall limit reached | 10% |
The grid reaches the daily threshold at about 140.2 pips and the overall threshold at about 159.8 pips. For trades with stop-losses, include costs:
Loss per losing trade = Lots × Stop-loss in pips × $10 + Lots × Cost per lot
At a 20-pip stop, five lots risk 1% through price movement. Assume another $9 per lot: $7 round-trip commission plus a 0.2-pip spread. This cost is illustrative. One loss is $1,045; four cost $4,180, and a fifth brings the total to $5,225. At 2.5 lots the tenth loss breaches the limit; at 10 lots the third does.
Note: FTMO Rewards Standard and Blueberry Funded prohibit opening or closing trades within two minutes of restricted news, including automatic SL/TP execution. You could set the EA to stop at 3–4% when the firm’s daily allowance is 5%. The prop firm risk management guide explains equity calculations.
How To Run An EA On A VPS Without Breaching IP Rules

To run an EA on a VPS, install MT5 on a virtual server so the bot continues working when your home computer or connection is off. The VPS must not be used to exploit price latency or misstate your residence.
VPS And IP Rules By Firm
Each firm’s VPS terms need a separate check:
- FTMO: Its US FAQ updated 9 October 2026 permits VPN/VPS use, but the global version was not checked by the reference date.
- Blueberry Funded: Its document updated 9 July 2026 requires a static VPS IP, one person or household per IP and no more than two devices connected simultaneously.
- FundingPips: Its document updated 19 August 2026 bans VPN/VPS access yet also mentions VPS invoices as proof of location. Ask support about your exact setup.
- FundedNext: Offers a paid VPS & EA add-on and bans shared devices, and country restrictions still apply.
- E8 Markets, The5ers and Maven Trading: VPS terms were unclear on the pages checked. E8 also limits allocation by household and IP.
Minimum VPS Specifications For A Prop Firm Account
Use these reference specifications:
| Tier | CPU | RAM | Storage | Suitable For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 2 vCPU | 2 GB | 40 GB SSD | One terminal, lightweight EA |
| Recommended | 2–4 vCPU | 4 GB | 60–80 GB SSD/NVMe | Two to three terminals |
Each account needs its own terminal. With two or more accounts, consider the recommended tier and avoid backtesting on a VPS running live EAs.
Six Steps To Attach An EA To MT5 On A VPS
Following MetaQuotes’ instructions:
- Copy the EA: Open File → Open Data Folder and place the .ex5 file in MQL5/Experts, or compile a .mq5 file in MetaEditor.
- Attach it: Double-click the EA in Navigator or drag it onto a chart. Run only one EA per chart.
- Set local permissions: Enable Allow Algo Trading under Common, then configure lot size, news filters and daily stop in Inputs.
- Check DLL permissions: Enable Allow DLL imports only if you trust the file source, because external libraries can execute code on the VPS.
- Enable global trading: Switch on Algo Trading. Consider Disable automated trading when switching accounts under Tools → Options → Expert Advisors.
- Check before disconnecting: Inspect the EA icon, use the trading password instead of the investor password, and choose Disconnect rather than Shut down.
See the MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisors documentation for the platform instructions.
Eight-Point Checklist Before Prop Firm EA Trading
Before paying for a challenge, check all eight items:
- Country: Read the latest restricted-country list and check both residence and citizenship rules.
- Exact package: Compare EA terms by account size, platform and challenge or funded stage.
- EA origin: Keep source code and revision history if you may need to prove you wrote it.
- Approval: Save written support replies and screenshots of the terms when declaration or an exception is required.
- Stop threshold: Include floating losses, commission and spread. Test through major news days on a demo or Free Trial.
- News calendar: Account for automatic SL/TP execution inside restricted windows and market closing times.
- Frequency: Cap trades, pending orders and modifications to avoid excessive-load violations.
- Consistency: FundedNext bans switching from an EA during the challenge to manual trading when funded, or vice versa.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Prop Firm EA Trading
Can You Trade A Prop Firm Account With An EA?
Yes, depending on the firm and package. FTMO and E8 Markets permit EAs under conditions, while Blueberry Funded accepts approved self-written bots. FundedNext requires an account below $50,000 on MT4/MT5 plus an add-on. The5ers requires source-code ownership according to its published information, which was not directly checked. Permission in principle does not guarantee approval of your specific EA.
Does FTMO Allow Trading Bots?
Yes, provided they avoid Forbidden Trading Practices. Its US FAQ updated 12 October 2026 sets a maximum of 200 pending MT5 orders, calls more than 2,000 daily server requests excessive, and caps capital per trader or strategy at $400,000. Third-party EAs may duplicate a strategy, so check the terms for your account.
Which Prop Firms Ban EAs Entirely?
Maven Trading publishes an EA ban but mentions exceptions with prior approval, although that information was not directly checked. FundedNext bans EAs on accounts of $50,000 or more and on cTrader and Match-Trader. FundingPips bans them in its Monthly Competition, while some E8 Markets Futures products do not support them. Get any exception confirmed in writing.
Can You Use A Purchased EA In A Prop Firm Challenge?
Not every purchased EA is banned. Blueberry Funded prohibits commercial EAs, and FundingPips limits third-party EAs to trade management except on 1K Instant. The5ers requires source-code ownership according to published information that was not directly checked. Five $100,000 FTMO accounts running one strategy total $500,000, exceeding the US version’s $400,000 cap.
Can A VPS IP Get Your EA Account Blocked?
Yes, if access breaches the firm’s IP terms. FTMO US permits VPS use, Blueberry Funded requires a static IP for one person or household, and FundingPips bans VPN/VPS connections. FundedNext prohibits shared devices. Before you run an EA on a VPS, check the exact IP clause and save the firm’s written reply.
Conclusion: Read The Rules Before Enabling Algo Trading
Prop firm EA trading is accepted by several firms, but permission depends on the robot and package. Check residence eligibility, prohibited strategies and the daily loss threshold before paying a challenge fee.
Where VPS use is allowed, keep a dedicated, stable IP that matches your true location. Read more about forex Expert Advisors and reputable prop firms before choosing a challenge.
Disclaimer: Backcom.io compiled these firm terms as at 14 October 2026 for information only. This is not investment advice or a recommendation to use a particular EA. Rules can change, and a bot can still cost you a challenge fee, payout eligibility or your account.
