This limits how close Stop Loss, Take Profit or pending orders may be placed. A stop set too close can return “Invalid Stops.”

Fixed Points, An ATR Multiple Or Price Structure?

Fixed points: The built-in menu is simple to monitor, but its distance does not widen automatically as volatility rises.

ATR multiple: Multiply ATR on your trading timeframe by a chosen factor and convert the result to points. ATR measures range, not direction. The built-in menu keeps the original point value, so a fresh ATR-based distance requires manual edits or an EA.

Price structure: Place a buy stop below a recent swing low or a sell stop above a recent swing high. The menu cannot identify these levels, so move the stop manually or use an EA.

Calculate position size from the initial Stop Loss, not the later trailing distance. The guide to the 1% rule and lot sizing explains how to cap risk before a trade becomes profitable.

Trailing Stops With EAs And Prop Firm Rules

The built-in menu maintains a fixed point distance. An Expert Advisor can use other conditions for moving the Stop Loss.

When Does A Trailing EA Make More Sense Than The Built-In Menu?

Use an EA when the stop needs a rule the menu cannot apply:

Indicator-based stops: MQL5 includes CTrailingFixedPips, CTrailingMA and CTrailingPSAR for fixed pips, Moving Average and Parabolic SAR; MQL5 Wizard also offers a Trailing step.

MQL5 VPS operation: A trailing EA can migrate to the virtual terminal if it makes no DLL calls.

Broker-side Stop Loss updates: The EA requests SL/TP changes, but its terminal or VPS must stay active to submit each new level.

Message control: An EA that changes SL too frequently creates many server messages; one requiring DLLs cannot run on MQL5 VPS.

The forex EA guide covers installation, Algo Trading and backtesting.

Prop Firm Accounts: A Stop-Moving Tool May Count As An EA

FundedNext’s September 2026 terms show why traders must check tools that only modify Stop Loss:

$50,000 and above: Trading must be fully manual. FundedNext classifies tools that only change SL, TP or lot size as EAs. Set it on a computer or Windows VPS, then use the app to monitor the Stop Loss stored on the broker server and edit that level manually if needed.

Why Has My Stop Loss Not Moved After I Enabled Trailing?

Most often, the trade has not reached the chosen profit threshold. A 300-point setting on a five-digit currency pair needs roughly 30 pips of profit before the first adjustment. A closed or disconnected terminal also stops updates; MT5 may additionally be waiting for its 10-second processing interval. Check Journal for the latest attempted or completed modification.

How Many Points Should I Use For A Trailing Stop?

There is no universal number. The distance must satisfy the symbol’s Stops level and leave room for spread and ordinary movement within your strategy. Check ATR on your trading timeframe and convert pips using the symbol’s Digits setting. Try several distances on a demo account and compare results after costs before risking real money.

Will Trailing Resume Automatically When I Reopen MT5?

Consistent automatic restoration of the setting has not been verified. While the terminal was closed, the Stop Loss remained at the last level submitted to the broker. After reopening MT4 or MT5, right-click each position to check which Trailing Stop level is selected. Then inspect Journal when price moves further in your favour.

Is MetaTrader Trailing The Same As A Stock Broker’s Trailing Stop Order?

Not necessarily. Both move a stop when price moves favourably, but the feature described here runs in an MT4/MT5 desktop terminal for forex and CFDs. A stock broker’s order may have different storage and trigger rules. Read that broker’s own order documentation to learn where and how its trailing instruction is processed.

Conclusion

A trailing stop can protect part of a favourable move, provided its terminal stays online and price first reaches the activation distance. Set an initial Stop Loss from your risk budget, convert pips to points, configure MT5 or MT4 desktop, and review Journal. For operation while your computer is off, run the terminal on a Windows VPS or migrate a suitable trailing EA to MQL5 VPS.

Disclaimer: Backcom.io provides this material for information only, not as investment advice or a trading recommendation.
