How The Grid Works

A grid trading bot automatically places buy and sell orders at preset levels within a chosen price range. It aims to buy at a lower level and sell at a higher one as price moves back and forth. The settings automate execution; they cannot guarantee a gain. See OKX’s official spot grid explanation.

A grid is the interval between two order levels. In OKX’s example, a range from 100 to 400 split into three grids produces the intervals 100–200, 200–300 and 300–400.

A cycle works like this:

Allocate funds: The bot uses part of the strategy allocation to buy the initial coins needed for sell orders.

Place limit orders: It puts buys below the current price and sells above it at the chosen grid levels.

Replace filled orders: After a buy fills, the bot places a sell at the next higher level. After a sell fills, it places a lower buy.

Repeat: The cycle continues while price moves through the range and no stop condition has been triggered.

Binance illustrates BTC/USDC between 40,000 and 60,000 with five grids and six price levels. That is an example of the mechanism, not a suggested range. A filled buy alone is not profit: the corresponding sell and fees on both trades still count.

Why A Grid Trading Bot Suits A Sideways Market

Grid trading works best when price keeps moving within a range. Binance describes sideways, range-bound conditions as suitable because the bot follows trading rules rather than predicting direction.

A sustained decline: The bot can buy at successive levels, leaving you with coins worth less than you paid. Earlier completed cycles may not cover that unrealised loss.

A sustained rise: The bot sells coins in stages, so it may earn less than simply holding them, as Bitget notes.

Spot Grid Bot Vs Futures Grid Bot: What Changes?

Spot Grid Bot Vs Futures Grid Bot: What Changes?

A spot grid bot buys and sells coins on the spot market. See Binance’s spot grid parameters and calculation.

More grids narrow the return from each cycle. Binance warns when profit per grid is below the maker fee. That is why Backcom.io treats trading fees as a central part of the strategy’s economics.

A futures grid may also pay or receive funding fees, depending on the position. OKX uses reserved margin as a buffer. Check the current fee schedule for your account; the illustrative 0.1% rate is not automatically your fee on either exchange.

What Happens When Price Breaks The Grid, And How Do You Stop The Bot?

What Happens When Price Breaks The Grid, And How Do You Stop The Bot?

Grid profits can coexist with a loss on the coins still held. Look at total PnL, including realised and unrealised gains and losses, rather than counting completed cycles alone.

When Price Leaves The Grid Range: Each Exchange’s Response

The exchanges describe the behaviour outside the range as follows:

OKX: Its spot grid stops placing new orders beyond the selected upper or lower limit.

Binance: Grid trading pauses and may resume if price returns to the range.

Bitget: The bot pauses outside the range and generally resumes only after price re-enters it.

A break below the lower limit can leave the bot holding coins at an unrealised loss. A break above the upper limit can leave it sold out and missing further gains. These are implications of the order rules, not price forecasts.

A futures grid can be liquidated when margin is insufficient, as explained in the official OKX futures grid FAQ. OKX suggests considering a stop loss below the lower price for a Long grid.

Warning: The liquidation price shown during setup is only an estimate and can change. Binance warns that margin may be liquidated during extreme volatility; auto-add margin is off by default.

Stopping A Grid Bot: Sell Remaining Coins Or Keep Them?

Stopping a bot cancels its open orders. What happens to the remaining coins depends on the exit setting:

OKX: Choose to sell remaining coins at market or keep them in your account.

Binance: Sell All Base Coins on Stop is on by default for new strategies; switch it off if you want to keep the coins.

Bitget: With Sell at termination on, the bot sells all remaining coins. With it off, they stay in the Spot wallet.

Market orders may fill at an unfavourable price. TP/SL defines a trigger, not a guaranteed execution price. OKX Trailing Down may require more capital, while Bitget has trailing off by default.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Grid Trading Bots

What Is A Grid Bot, And Is It Different From A Grid Trading Bot?

A grid bot and a grid trading bot refer to the same automated strategy: placing buys and sells at set levels within a price range. Some traders reverse the word order, but the name does not change the mechanism. What matters when choosing one is whether it trades spot assets or leveraged futures, because the risks differ.

Can A Grid Trading Bot Make Money, And When Can It Lose?

There is no guaranteed profit. Even after multiple successful cycles, a sharp fall in the coins still held can leave the overall strategy in loss. In a persistent rise, staged selling may underperform simply holding the coins. A futures grid also risks liquidation. Set a range and loss limit, then monitor total PnL.

Does A Grid Trading Bot Charge Fees?

Yes. OKX, Binance and Bitget do not charge a separate fee to create these bots, but every filled order pays the ordinary trading fee. Futures grids can also incur funding fees. Binance’s 0.1% per order is an assumption in its calculation example, not a universal rate. Check profit per grid after fees before creating a strategy.

How Many Grids Should I Set?

No grid count works for every pair. Narrow grids can fill more often, but produce less profit per cycle while fees accumulate. Wider spacing has the opposite effect. Check Binance’s warning if projected profit per grid falls below the maker fee, and adjust any AI suggestion to your chosen range and actual costs.

What Does A Grid Bot Do When Price Leaves Its Range?

It normally stops trading the preset grid outside the chosen range. OKX describes a halt to new orders; Binance and Bitget describe a pause with trading resuming when price comes back. Decide in advance when you would stop after a downside or upside break, especially if the bot trades leveraged futures.

Conclusion: A Grid Trading Bot Enforces Rules, Not Profits

A grid trading bot can execute a buy-low, sell-high plan within a chosen range. Before starting one, assess the range, total fees and your response to a breakout. Profits from individual cycles do not replace total PnL.

Distinguish spot from futures grids, allocate suitable capital, inspect returns after fees, set TP/SL where appropriate and keep monitoring the strategy. If you are unsure which market to use, review those risks before choosing a bot.

Disclaimer: Backcom.io compiled this article from OKX, Binance and Bitget help materials available as at 16 October 2026.
