But what is an ECN account, and what do you pay beyond the quoted spread? These accounts usually pair raw, variable spreads with a separate per-lot commission. You also need to understand STP, market makers and how a broker handles orders before comparing prices. In this article, Backcom.io compares the three models, calculates round-turn costs for one lot of EURUSD and XAUUSD, and checks Raw-style accounts at six brokers alongside their stated rebates.

What Is An ECN Account And Where Does Your Order Go?

What Is An ECN Account And Where Does Your Order Go?

An ECN account is generally presented as access to an electronic communication network, where multiple participants contribute buy and sell quotes. Traders typically see variable raw spreads and pay a separate commission per lot. The word “ECN” on an account, however, cannot establish how any particular order was routed.

Instinet, the first ECN, was created in 1969. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission began using the term ECN in the 1970s; see this history of electronic communication networks.

A simplified ECN order flow looks like this:

Trader submits an order → broker routes it into a liquidity network → order matches an available quote → broker charges a per-lot commission

How To Recognise An ECN-Style Account

Check four features of the account and the actual trades it produces:

Variable raw spread: Quotes may start at 0.0 pips in deep liquidity, then widen around news or in thin markets.

Separate commission: The broker normally lists a per-lot charge. Some platforms post the full round-turn amount when you open a trade.

Market execution: You generally avoid a traditional requote, but the fill can still slip from the price you saw.

Market depth: Some platforms show Depth of Market (DOM, or Level II), depending on the instrument and broker setup.

These features help identify the fee structure and available tools. In retail forex, a broker described this way can set its client quote and act as the trade’s counterparty.

An “internalised” or B-Book trade means the broker keeps its risk on its own books rather than passing all of it to an external counterparty. It describes an operating method, not an accusation against any broker. There are two practical sides to consider:

Convenient execution of small orders: A broker can supply liquidity immediately without waiting for an outside party.

Potential conflict of interest: If it retains the opposing position, its financial interest can differ from yours.

A-Book, B-Book And Hybrid Models: Why The Lines Blur

In industry shorthand, A-Book means passing trade risk to an external liquidity counterparty; B-Book means retaining that risk. A hybrid broker can use both approaches, depending on the product, account type, order size or its risk policy. Account names therefore reveal less about routing than the relevant execution policy.

What Is A Raw Spread? That is why the table does not label any named broker a “true ECN” or a broker that internalises all orders. You can check three things yourself:

Execution documents: Read the order execution policy, account provider’s legal entity and disclosed licence.

Separate commission: Compare the fee schedule with the charge recorded in your trade history.

Measured cost: Log the spread when you place an order, then add commission in USD per lot.

“ECN” in an account name cannot confirm an individual order’s route. Raw or ECN accounts can carry a smaller rebate than a Standard account at the same broker because the commission paid to an introducing partner varies by account type. The guide to forex rebates per lot explains the calculation.

These two XAUUSD rates were recorded on 15 October 2026 and may change:

The Vantage rebate page lists $11.30/lot for Standard and $1.60/lot for RAW.

The Exness rebate page lists $9.65/lot for Standard and Cent, and $3.00/lot for Raw and Zero.

Apply the Vantage rates to the hypothetical gold spreads in the table: Standard costs $25 − $11.30 = $13.70 net, while Raw ECN costs $16 − $1.60 = $14.40 net for one lot. This particular spread assumption makes Standard slightly cheaper after rebate. The HFM vs Vantage gold cost comparison offers another net-cost example.

Check the broker rebate comparison for applicable rates before choosing an account. Backcom.io acts as an introducing broker (IB/affiliate) for brokers, receives commission from them and returns part of it to eligible traders; see the risk disclaimer.

Who Should Use An ECN Account Instead Of Standard?

A Raw or ECN account is often worth considering if you:

Scalp or use an EA: Frequent trades make small spread and commission differences add up.

Trade larger volumes: A per-lot commission makes one part of the bill easy to forecast.

Want to see raw pricing: You can track the quoted spread and the broker charge separately.

A Standard account can be more convenient if you:

Trade small positions infrequently: A spread-inclusive charge is simpler to follow.

Have limited starting capital: Access conditions may differ from Raw accounts, depending on the broker.

Are new to trading: You do not need to reconcile another commission line in trade history.

Compare USD per lot after any eligible rebate, using spreads you actually observe. Do not choose from an account label or a “from” spread alone. The guide to low-spread forex brokers and trading costs covers other inputs to that comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About ECN Accounts

How Is An ECN Account Different From A Standard Account?

The clearest difference to verify is how you are charged. An ECN or Raw account usually combines a raw spread with a separate commission; Standard commonly includes the broker charge in its spread. The illustrative EURUSD Raw commissions here are $5–$7 per lot, round turn. Convert both account structures to USD per lot for the same instrument and time before deciding which costs less.

Does A Spread From 0.0 Pips Mean Trading Is Free?

No. Zero is an advertised possible spread, not a promise that you will pay nothing. The account may still charge commission, and the live spread can change. At the hypothetical 0.1-pip EURUSD spread in this article, a one-lot round trip costs $6–$8, depending on commission. Check both the live quote and the exact account fee during the hours you normally trade.

Is Exness An ECN Broker Or A Market Maker?

Exness offers Standard, Standard Cent, Pro, Raw Spread and Zero accounts, but none is named ECN. Those labels alone cannot establish whether a particular trade was routed externally or retained by the broker. Read the legal and execution documents for the entity serving your country, then check the specifications shown in your client area. The answer cannot be settled from the marketing name.

How Can You Tell Whether An ECN Broker Is Genuine?

You cannot independently verify the route of every order from outside the broker. CFI cautions that an ECN claim is not proof of the model. Vantage also describes Raw ECN as “ECN-style” trading on a principal basis. Review the applicable execution policy and legal entity, compare the commission actually charged, and record fill quality. None of those checks alone reveals every counterparty.

Can An ECN Account Earn Rebates, And Why Might They Be Lower?

Yes, if the account and trades meet the programme rules. Raw rebates may be lower because the broker pays the introducing partner differently for each account type. For XAUUSD, the Vantage rates recorded on 15 October 2026 were $11.30/lot for Standard and $1.60/lot for RAW. Use the current eligible rate, alongside spread and commission, when calculating your net cost.

Conclusion

Knowing what an ECN account is helps you read its fee structure, but the account name does not prove how each order is executed. When comparing ECN, STP and market makers, separate what a broker publishes from what you can measure. Round-turn cost starts with the spread converted to money plus commission; any eligible rebate changes the net figure.

Disclaimer: This content was compiled by Backcom.io for information only, not as investment advice or a trading recommendation.
