Before choosing a setting, you need to separate the margin requirement from your effective leverage. In this article, Backcom.io explains 1:500 leverage, estimates the distance to stop out and compares the advertised maximums at six brokers.

What Is Leverage In Forex?

What Is Leverage In Forex?

Forex leverage is the ratio between the full value of a position and the margin your broker holds to open it. With $1,000 equity and a 1:500 setting, a 0.05-lot EURUSD trade at 1.1000 uses just 5.5 times effective leverage.

A suggested range of 1:5–1:10 usually refers to effective leverage. Trader rebates come from commissions the brokers pay their partner, as explained in the risk disclaimer.

Why Broker Maximums Differ

The legal entity determines which limits apply. IC Markets’ materials show gold at 1:20 in Australia and 1:500 in Seychelles.

For example, $300 equity and one EURUSD lot at 1:500 require $220 margin, putting equity at about 136% of margin. If applicable leverage drops to 1:200, margin rises to $550 and the ratio falls to 54.5%, close to a 50% stop-out level.

What Is Unlimited Leverage, And Should You Enable It?

Unlimited leverage means zero or near-zero required margin on eligible instruments. Three brokers in this comparison offer a version:

Exness: Equity and trading-history conditions are covered in the Exness account types guide.

HFM: Under its published terms, InfinityX applies unlimited leverage within the initial lot allowance; see HFM’s InfinityX account.

Vantage: Premium Unlimited uses dynamic limits based on equity and news hours; see Vantage’s Premium Unlimited account.

According to broker disclosures, some such accounts have a 0% stop-out level, so a position may close only when equity is nearly exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Forex Leverage

How Much Margin Does 1:100 Leverage Require?

1:100 requires margin equal to 1% of the position value. At the prices assumed here, 0.1 EURUSD lot needs $110, one lot needs $1,100 and 0.01 gold lot needs $41.50. The minimum needed to open a trade is not a sensible target for your entire balance: leave free equity to absorb adverse price moves.

How Much Leverage Should I Use With $100?

Work out the lot size and stop loss before the account setting. At $100 equity, 0.01 gold lot needs $41.50 margin at 1:100 or $8.30 at 1:500, but still represents a $4,150 position. A $5-per-ounce adverse move costs $5, or 5% of equity. The trader needs a smaller lot.

Can I Change Leverage While A Trade Is Open?

It depends on the broker and account type. The setting is usually changed in the broker’s client portal, not MT4 or MT5. IC Markets’ policy notes that changing it while positions remain open can raise required margin and cause stop out. Recalculate margin first, especially if equity is already close to the closing threshold.

Which Forex Broker Offers The Highest Maximum Leverage?

There is no fixed winner. As at 14 October 2026, Exness, HFM and Vantage advertised conditional unlimited modes. An IC Markets introductory page said up to 1:5000, while product materials gave lower limits for other scopes. Compare the legal entity, account type and trading symbol before treating any advertised maximum as available to you.

Does Leverage Change Spreads, Trading Fees Or Rebates?

Not directly. Spreads and commissions are generally calculated by lot; swap depends on the instrument, position size and holding time. Forex rebates depend on the conditions of the account and its eligible lots, not simply its leverage setting. Compare costs at the same position size to see what actually changes.

Conclusion

Understanding forex leverage means separating the account setting, your effective exposure and the amount at risk on each trade. Choose lots from your stop-loss distance and the money you can afford to lose, then check effective leverage. The position size calculator converts a risk amount into lots before each trade.

Disclaimer: This article was compiled by Backcom.io for information only and is not investment advice.
